In Taiwan, YouBike has become easy to overlook: the same sturdy bicycles appear at docks day after day, absorbed into ordinary city life. Elsewhere, shared-bicycle booms left behind heaps of fallen frames and broken parts.
A YouBike with its saddle turned backward may look abandoned, but the gesture is legible to someone in the system. By the morning rush, bicycles have also appeared where the city will need them most, after moving through the night.
In cities where shared bicycles were left wherever a ride ended, YouBike asks riders to finish at a dock. On Taiwan’s streets, that small inconvenience is easy to miss: another station is often only a few minutes away.
In Dajia, Taichung, rice fields and low factory buildings stretch through a town that looks almost unremarkable. Yet bicycles carrying the logos of Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale trace back to this quiet corner of Taiwan.
At MRT exits, university gates, and ordinary street corners, the same yellow-and-white bicycles wait in neat rows before disappearing into traffic. Their constant presence makes it easy to overlook how unusual it is for a public bicycle system to become this unremarkable.
Taiwan makes bicycles that are sold around the world, yet its city streets were once surprisingly quiet of riders. Today, a thin blue line, a free water stop, and a long-distance cycling event can turn the island itself into a course.
